Weeds seem to be everywhere, from our gardens to Anchorage’s parks and forests. But what exactly is a weed? Are all weeds invasive plants? This presentation explores the ecology and philosophy of invasive species management in a changing world. We will examine how human influence has reshaped ecosystems, and how land managers navigate competing approaches: from letting nature take its course to active intervention. Participants will learn how invasive species establish and spread, the ecological impacts they can have, and the ways they may also have benefits. Using real examples from Anchorage landscapes, we will explore the Resist-Accept-Direct (RAD) framework, a tool used by scientists and land managers to guide decisions about ecological change. Ultimately, the talk invites participants to consider a deeper question: When ecosystems are changing rapidly, should we restore the past, adapt to change, or help guide nature toward a new future?

Our speaker, Hannah Thompson, is the Invasive Species Program Leader with the Anchorage Soil and Water Conservation District. She has a BS in Ecology, 3 years of experience in biological research, and 5 years of experience working with Invasive Species in Anchorage. She is passionate about conservation, ecology, fish, wildlife, and of course, plants. In her position, Hannah serves as coordinator of the Anchorage Cooperative Species Management Area (ANC-CISMA), and serves as a board member on the Alaska Invasive Species Partnership (AKISP) board.
