Call for Abstracts
Soil erosion caused by wind and/or water is a continuing problem throughout the world that threatens the capacity of the Earth to produce food, fiber, and renewable sources of energy for an ever-increasing population. Additionally, eroded sediment and agricultural chemicals are major water and air pollutants, causing many detrimental off-site impacts. Compounding the erosion problems are the effects of climate change. Warmer air temperatures also increase ocean water temperatures, that can result in larger and more severe storms and hurricanes. For example, Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane Maria in September 2017, with over 2900 fatalities, as well as infrastructure and erosion damages across the island. This decennial symposium provides a forum for participants to discuss the status and future of soil erosion research. In addition to oral and poster sessions, there will be a midweek tour of erosion and water quality sites on the island, and a special day at the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez whose faculty and staff have been critical in responding to recent catastrophic events.
