2019 People's Choice Winner - Lynn Betts

Entry Period

The photo contest begins January 21, 2020, and ends June 5, 2020. Entries submitted before or after the entry period will not be eligible.

Entry Guidelines

The mission of the Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS) is to foster the science and art of natural resource conservation. For the 2020 photo contest, we invite submissions that portray this year’s Annual Conference theme, “Expanding Horizons: Where Conservation Meets Innovation,” and acknowledge the history of conservation, highlight recent tools and innovations, or look to future developments as SWCS celebrates its 75th Anniversary.

About the Theme

This year’s conference theme evokes images of the expansive views of the Midwest region and the deep and varied soil horizons that make Iowa’s farmland some of the most productive in the world. The theme also speaks to the broadening of individual perceptions and experiences as attendees discover new concepts, partners, and advancements in soil and water research. Additionally, the theme pays tribute to the rich history of the soil and water conservation movement while providing insight into the future of the profession. Read more on the Annual Conference theme at www.swcs.org/20AC.

We want to see photos that display soil and water conservation in action, showcase the beauty of Iowa’s natural resources, pay tribute to past achievements, and/or inspire conservation professionals working to ensure the future of our natural resources on both private and public lands.

Submit high quality (300 dpi or greater), electronic format jpeg or tiff files to pubs@swcs.org. You may enter up to three photographs. No printed or mailed photos will be accepted.

Entry emails should include:

· Photographer name and email address

· Location where photo was taken (city, state/province, country)

· Short description (1-3 sentences)

A panel will judge photos based on depiction of the conference theme, visual composition, and overall appeal.

The top 12 photos selected by the judging panel will be displayed at the 75th SWCS International Annual Conference, July 26-29, 2020, in Des Moines, Iowa, and two awards will be given.

Expanding Horizons - One winner selected by the judging panel that best depicts the conference theme ($50 Amazon eGift card)

People’s Choice - One winner selected by popular vote from entries on display during the 75th SWCS International Annual Conference ($50 Amazon eGift card and publication on the cover of the Journal of Soil and Water Conservation)
