The North Central Region reflects a dynamic landscape shaped by natural processes and its central role in US agriculture. From the deep, fertile soils of the Corn Belt and expansive row crop fields to remnant and restored prairies, glaciated plains, and extensive river systems, the region highlights the close relationship between working lands and natural resources. Moving across the Midwest, one encounters intensively managed farmland alongside wetlands, woodlands, and growing urban areas—each offering unique opportunities for conservation practice and innovation.

Challenges for the North Central Region include ongoing soil conservation and water quality concerns tied to intensive agricultural production. While progress has been made in reducing erosion, soil health remains a critical issue, particularly where rented farmland can limit long-term stewardship. Additional challenges include nutrient runoff impacting major waterways, loss of productive farmland to development, increasing pressure on conservation systems from extreme weather events, and the need to better support conservation in expanding urban and peri-urban areas.
Soil and Water Conservation Society chapters across the North Central Region provide meetings and professional development opportunities to address and discuss the issues most relevant to their states. These chapters focus on improving soil health, water quality, and nutrient management, while also encouraging stronger communication, ethical and effective service delivery, and collaboration with a broad range of partners. Members across the North Central Region recognize the importance of building connections that influence both on-the-ground conservation practices and the policies that shape the region’s natural resource future.
