2006 Environthon

The 2006 Oklahoma Envirothon will be held on April 3-5, 2006 at the OU Biological Station on Lake Texoma.  The 2006 Canon Envirothon will be in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada on July 23-29, 2006.  For more information visit: http://www.envirothonok.com/index.html

The All-Oklahoma Chapter is the primary sponsor of the state’s Envirothon competition and has been for the last five years. This academic contest for high school youth provides an opportunity to compete and learn about the environment. Students compete as a team in field exercises, written exams, and oral presentation on a broad range of topics including forestry, wildlife, soils, aquatics and annual topics of emphasis in the area where the contest is held. Each year the contest is held in a different part of the state allowing students to experience a variety of ecological conditions and allowing our chapter to be recognized across the state.

Members of the SWCS Oklahoma chapter enjoyed participating in the 2005 Envirothon.

Oklahoma Well Represented in New York

Our Oklahoma Chapter made a strong showing at the 2005 International Soil and Water Conservation Society’s Annual Conference in Rochester, New York on the shores of Lake Ontario. Our Chapter was recognized with two awards at the Awards Luncheon. These were “Outstanding Chapter” for 2004 and“Sustained Performance” for our work with the National Land and Range Judging Competition. Becky Ross also received a Commendation Award. The 2008 International Soil and Water Conservation Society's Annual Conference is July 26 to July 30, in Tucson, Nevada.  For more information visit Conferences.

Supports Students in our Field

The chapter continues its involvement with the Oklahoma State University Student Chapter as both chapters continue to grow and support each other. Chapter officers routinely speak at student chapter meetings and keep the student chapter informed through our liaison position, our newsletter, and email.

Always there for Environmental Education
As has been the case for several years now, the All-Oklahoma chapter has provided technical, volunteer, and financial support to several environmental educational programs. Two hundred and fifty dollars were given to the Oklahoma Envirothon and members assisted with site locations as group leaders and as technical advisors. The chapter has also helped sponsor the Governor’s Water Conference held annually in October.
Something new for 2004 was a Homecoming Tailgate Party for the Oklahoma State and Texas A&M football game.

Current Information for Members

Through a grant from the Noble Foundation, the chapter publishes a quarterly newsletter. The most recent newsletter highlighted the state and national meetings as well as other chapter events, introduced new officers and our scholarship recipient, and outlined events for the coming year.

Participants in Issues Beyond State Boarders

The All-Oklahoma Chapter is pleased to have two International Board of Directors as members of our Chapter: Dr. Jean Steiner, President and Larry Wright, South Central Regional Director. The chapter is always well-represented at the international meeting and had 10 members and three Oklahoma State University Student Chapter members in attendance in St. Paul, Minnesota. The chapter sponsored the students for their trip to the meeting.

Ample Activities for Professional Development, Networking and Sharing

The All-Oklahoma Chapter is an annual sponsor of the National Land Judging Competition created in Oklahoma and held annually in Oklahoma City since 1952. Future Farmers of America (FFA) and 4-H teams qualify for the national event by placing among the top five teams at contests held in their home states. In 2004, 160 teams from 36 states participated. Such a large event would not be possible without the combined efforts of many partners including the Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts. Contest cosponsors include the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce, Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Oklahoma Conservation Commission, Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education, Oklahoma Farmers Union, Oklahoma Farm Bureau and numerous other businesses and organizations.

Teams match skills in judging the adaptability of land for various purposes including farming, range management, and home site construction. Chapter members assist as guides to and around the land sites and as ambassadors for Oklahoma and the Oklahoma City area.

Scholarships

One of the chapter’s main fundraising activities is the sale of t-shirts, hats, towels, clipboards, and other useful items to participants and spectators at most sponsored events. Proceeds from these sales go toward our chapter’s scholarship fund. Depending on student interest and funding, the chapter gives one to three scholarships each year valuing $500 each. For award winners go to Accomplishments.
