Resources for Chapter Leaders

Our chapters depend upon strong and creative leaders to bring together conservation professionals and conduct activities at the state and local levels. Chapters elect officers, organize conservation events, fundraise, and address natural resource issues within their regions. 

The links below serve as a toolkit to help chapter officers and leaders engage their chapters and grow their membership. For more information on leadership training and resources to help chapters succeed, contact SWCSMembership@swcs.org

Chapter Reports and Awards
Each chapter must annually complete a Chapter Activity Report. Reports are due in March for the previous year. Our chapter awards nomination form is combined with the mandatory report, allowing chapters to easily apply for four annual awards when filling out the report.

Marketing and Recruitment Materials

National SWCS provides recruitment and marketing materials to chapter leaders upon request. Please contact SWCSMembership@swcs.org to request the following:

  • Membership brochures 
  • Chapter member lists
  • Membership bookmarks
  • Membership recruitment posters
  • Gift membership information
  • SWCS letterhead (electronic or print)*
  • SWCS traveling display banner (standing or tabletop use)*

Tax Information
SWCS Chapters are 501(c)3 organizations and must file with the IRS. Please view the IRS website for tax information and a compliance guide for nonprofits. ALL SWCS chapters must file a 990, 990EZ or 990N form to maintain nonprofit status. Chapters are also responsible for fulfilling public charity/nonprofit tax filing requirements within their respective states.   

Chapter Communications 
There are many resources available for communicating within your chapter and even between chapters. We’ve provided some suggestions for launching and maintaining chapter websites, social media, and newsletters, as well as SWCS communications policies and brand standards. 

Share your chapter activities with the SWCS membership! We publish news and event announcements the monthly Conservogram newsletter, in weekly chapter notes, through our social media outlets, and in our website calendar of events. Please email pubs@swcs.org, tag us in your Facebook post, or tweet @SWCSNews.

Professional Development and Continuing Education Units 
SWCS chapter meetings and events often offer continuing education opportunities (CEUs) to Society members and the public. To assist in the event planning process, we provide information for chapters and members about benefits of offering CEUs, how to obtain approval to offer CEUs, and which professionals need CEUs
