Research, education, and policy needs identified for reservoir system

As a product of the Sedimentation, Conservation Measures, and the Future of Reservoirs conference, held September 14-16, 2009 in Kansas City, MO, conference organizers, attendees, and SWCS have summarized the research, educational, and policy needs identified at the conference that are necessary to protect and sustain our system of reservoirs and to fully realize their potential benefits in an SWCS Issue Brief

The conference was sponsored by USDA-CSREES (Grant No. 2008-35102-19258), USDA-ARS, K-State Research and Extension, and the Soil and Water Conservation Society, and attended by 172 professionals from 23 states plus District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and two Canadian Provinces, representing a range of university, government, and private organizations.  Read More...

The “From Dust Bowl to Mud Bowl: Sedimentation, Conservation Measures and the Future of Reservoirs” conference in Kansas City was a success. Far exceeding our original estimates of 120 attendees, the 172 registrants included 55 speaker presentations and 14 poster presentations. Attendees repeatedly commented on how pleased they were with the nationally and internationally recognized speakers in their subject and research areas.

Online, post-conference discussion will continue through a new group on the SWCS Network that anyone is invited to join. Go to the SWCS Network.

The planning team and facilitators will work over the next 90 days to complete the conference summary reports to funders as well as a four-page document summarizing the research, education, and policy needs as identified by attendees during the Wednesday morning working sessions. If you would like to participate in the development of post-conference documents and sharing the results of the conference, please contact Dewayne Johnson or Bill Hargrove.
